Microsoft and the Design Department at Cornish College engaged in a unique and collaborative opportunity.

THE CHALLENGE: Leverage the creative, problem-solving disposition of designers and creative artists, and encourage them to explore the artistic possibilities of mixed reality with the HoloLens.

The HoloLens team offered pre-release exposure to their holographic technology, as well as technical support, while Cornish engaged a select group of innovative student talent to generate unique, mixed reality experiences through design, dance, and theatrical performance. The Cornish  proposal was chosen from a field of over 800 applicants. As a result of this collaboration Cornish became a member of a select group of early HoloLens partners and joined the list of collaborators including NASA, Cleveland Clinic, Autodesk, and Trimble.

A showcase of the BFA mixed reality exhibit featured original creative work by the Cornish students. The exhibit included student performances that were recorded on a 360° soundstage and then rendered as holographic videos, as well as student animations and motion designs that were produced specifically for viewing on Microsoft’s HoloLens device.

This project positioned me really well to work in an environment where companies were expanding their use of technology. I felt like I had a lot of knowledge that I was able to bring to my new job.

The Cornish HoloLens Project was supervised by Jeff Brice, Chair of Design and Robin Avni, Assistant Professor User Experience; both full-time Cornish faculty with a depth of creative, research, and professional technology experience. The Microsoft team was led by Ben Porter, Director of Business Strategy for HoloLens.
