Green Gifting

SUSTAINABLE LIVING | by CELESTE TELL

GIFTS. PRESENTS. SHOPPING. Just the idea conjures thrills in some, strikes abject terror in others. Truth be told, many of us have too much stuff already, and the planet is hoping that we’ll consider changing some of the ways we gift each other. So here are a few low-impact and meaningful gift ideas:

  • Homemade treats. Everyone loves homemade treats. We have been baking and gifting holiday treats since my teens were babies, and it’s become an annual ritual. Every year I try to come up with a container that is both fun and festive that people can reuse.
  • Capture the memories. Create a self-published book. Combine photos of the kids with their artwork and writing for grandparents. Make a cookbook of favorite family recipes or have historic family photos restored and combine with genealogies, or document trips and adventures with photo-journals. Be sure to print on recycled paper stock. Several online services will help you self-publish.
  • Donate to a nonprofit. One of the most delightful gifts is a donation to a charity or nonprofit that is meaningful and valued by the receiver. Think about local charities in that special someone’s community or special interest.
  • Front-row seats. Buy tickets to a show or concert you know someone would really love. Even if it is a few months away, tickets to see a favorite band or show will light up someone’s life.
  • Give the gift of time. Give an IOU for a lunch date, picnic in the woods, a weekend escape, or a night out while you watch the kids.

Whatever you decide to give, take a few minutes to think about what will delight that special someone. Those few extra minutes will be well worth it.
