Holiday Decorating: Five Things To Think About
CELBRATIONS | by JANNA LUFKIN
YEARS AGO I VOWED TO KEEP HOLIDAY DECORATING SIMPLE and focus on what’s important about the season. It’s a time of giving, it’s about family and friends and it’s a time to reflect on all that we have. It’s not about outdoing each other. It’s not a race, it’s not a competition. It’s a celebration.
Here are five things to think about when decorating this year.

- Start early to cut down on stress. Already now, just after Thanksgiving, dig out your lights and make sure they work, locate ornaments and stockings, etc. Sort and donate what you may not want, stack the rest in one location. They’re ready to go when you’re ready to decorate.
- “Christmas is for kids”. How many times have you heard that? Let them help, go with their ideas ― they’re making memories, for you and for them.
- Think green. Look around your house and see what you might re-purpose this season. For example: Simple glass cylinders and florist vases (we all have those), make great candle holders. Dress them up with a sprig of fresh cedar.
- Get creative. You don’t HAVE to buy a tree. In years past, I’ve decorated a large tumbleweed and a ficus that had seen better days. They were both pretty, unique, cheap and stress-free.
- Keep it simple. Every room does not need to be decorated. It gets overwhelming and over-done quickly. Pick a focal point and stick to it.
Holiday decorating should be fun and a part of your family traditions. Keep it simple and you’ll be well on your way to enjoying the season.

Oh so true Janna! With a large dog running around, the traditional tree had to go – I think this year will be some branches I spray paint white and stick in a garden urn – it is all about using what you already have in different ways!
